PUNJABI AND SOUTH ASIAN COUNSELLING
Culturally informed therapy for South Asian individuals navigating family expectations, identity, and everything quietly carried in between.
There’s a lot that goes unsaid..until it can’t anymore.
You’ve been holding a lot. The expectations at home. The exhaustion of being everything to everyone. The quiet guilt that comes with wanting something different, without quite knowing how to explain that to the people you love.
‍
Maybe you’ve thought about therapy before. But the idea of sitting across from someone who doesn’t understand your world felt like too much work on top of everything else. That’s exactly why this service exists. Therapy where your culture is already understood, not something you have to justify.
‍
There is also something specific that happens when you can speak in your own language. When you don’t have to search for the English word for a feeling that only exists in Punjabi, or explain a concept your therapist should already understand, you stop managing the conversation and start actually having it. That shift alone can change everything.
‍
Punjabi speaking clients are welcome to have sessions fully in Punjabi, a mix of both languages, or entirely in English, whatever feels most comfortable and natural to you.
“Talking openly, without worrying how it will sound, without translating your feelings first, is one of the most relieving things a person can experience.”
— The experience our therapists witness every day
Why You Might Be Here
‍
You don’t need a dramatic reason to come to therapy. Many of our clients arrive quietly exhausted, not from one big event, but from the steady weight of years spent putting others first, keeping the peace, and managing how they appear to the world.
‍
Carrying your family's hopes alongside your own. The weight of being the bridge between two worlds. You may love your culture deeply and still feel constrained by its expectations. You may feel pride and grief about the same thing. You may be the first to ask certain questions, sitting with the discomfort of uncertainty. That experience is specific, and it deserves specific support.
‍
Caught between what your family wants and what you need, and feeling guilty for wanting something different.
‍
Living between two cultures without feeling fully at home in either. Unsure where you fit, or whether you have to choose.
‍
Saying yes when you mean no. Shrinking yourself to keep others comfortable. Running on empty and calling it normal.
‍
Therapy here isn’t about telling you to cut ties or reject your culture. It’s about helping you find more space within your own life, on your own terms, with your own values intact.
‍
In many South Asian communities, mental health is still spoken about in hushed tones, or not at all. Here, there is no shame in struggling. There never was.
‍
Being the bridge between two worlds, loving your culture deeply while feeling the weight of its expectations, deserves thoughtful, culturally grounded support.
How Therapy at Aasra Wellness Helps
What makes this different is not only professional training, but lived understanding. A therapist who has grown up inside a South Asian family system does not need the dynamics explained. They already know what it means when you say your parents would be devastated. They understand the weight of izzat without needing it defined. They know the difference between setting a limit and betraying your family. That kind of understanding cannot be learned from a textbook and it changes the quality of the work in ways that are immediately felt.
‍
This isn’t generic counselling adapted for South Asian clients. It’s therapy built from a genuine understanding of the cultural experience, the family dynamics, the unspoken rules, and the emotional complexity of living between two worlds.
No needing to explain why you can’t “just move out,” why family honour matters, or what it means to be the eldest. Your context is already understood. You can go straight to what’s actually hurting.
‍
For many clients, some emotions only exist in Punjabi, feelings that lose something in translation. Speaking in your first language removes the cognitive labour of self-translation and allows you to access and express experiences with far greater precision and ease. The work goes deeper because nothing is being lost between languages.

‍
Beyond the roles and responsibilities. Beyond the expectations. Just you, figuring out what you want, what you feel, and what kind of life actually fits.

Questions
I’ve never tried therapy before and I’m nervous. Is that normal?
Completely. Most people feel some nervousness before their first session, especially if seeking help wasn’t something encouraged growing up. The first conversation is gentle, unhurried, and entirely on your terms. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready to.
My family doesn’t believe in therapy. Will that make things harder?
Not at all. Many of our clients come precisely because their families wouldn’t understand. You don’t need anyone’s permission to take care of your mental health. Your sessions are completely confidential, and no one in your family needs to know.
Will my therapist actually understand what I’m going through as a South Asian?
Yes, and this matters deeply to us. Our therapists bring both professional training and lived cultural understanding to every session. You won’t have to spend your therapy time educating your therapist about your cultural values, norms, traditions or, joint family dynamics, or why leaving isn’t always simple. That groundwork is already there.
What if I want to speak in Punjabi?
Sessions can be conducted entirely in Punjabi, entirely in English, or through a natural blend of both, however you feel most comfortable expressing yourself. Many clients find that certain feelings only find their truest form in Punjabi, and that’s entirely welcomed here.
I’m not in crisis. Am I allowed to come to therapy?
Absolutely. You don’t need to be at rock bottom to deserve support. Many of our clients come feeling quietly stuck, tired, or like something isn’t quite right, even if they can’t fully name it yet. That is more than enough reason to start. Many clients also use therapy as ongoing maintenance for their mental health.
How long will therapy take?
That depends entirely on you, what you’re working through and what pace feels right. Some clients feel significant shifts within a few sessions. Others prefer longer term support. We’ll regularly check in and let you lead the way. There’s no fixed timeline you’re expected to follow.
What does a session cost, and is funding available?
Same fees for all counselling services (except for CVAP/ICBC): $150 per session
